The countries evaluated in this region include:
• China
• South Korea
• ASEAN Countries
• India
• Japan
• Australia
• Rest of Asia-Pacific
South Korea is expected to observe the fastest
growth in the Asia-Pacific market over the forecast period. Further, other countries in the region, such as
China, India, Australia, and Japan, have pledged to increase their respective
renewable energy shares in the power mix to decrease emission levels. This
indicates a positive outlook for the market. However, the lack of significant
investments from the private sector and the lack of a suitable infrastructure
for constructing biomass plants is a key market challenge for the region.
In South Korea, electricity production from forest biomass increased by
61 times, from 106,023 MWh to 6,490,437 MWh from 2012 to 2018. This equates to
a whopping 160% annual growth. Also, the majority of biomass energy, nearly 75%
of the total electricity produced from biomass in the country in 2018, was
obtained from coal-fired power plants used to co-fire forest biomass with coal.
These developments are indicative of substantial growth for the South Korean
market in the near future.
Thailand has set targets to install biomass power infrastructure with a
5.57 GW capacity and biogas-based power plants having a 1.28 GW capacity. To
decrease its reliance on fossil fuel imports, the government is planning to
turn to biomass power as a key solution. This can be attributed to the easy
availability of biomass feedstock such as rice husk, wood chips, livestock
waste, and municipal waste in the country. As a result, the biomass power in
the country would experience growth in the forecast period.
Solid biomass includes organic, non-fossil-derived solid materials
having biological origin. These are used either for heat production or
electricity generation. The demand for solid biomass is increasing across the
world owing to government mandates by various countries to blend solid biomass
with the existing coal-based power plants to limit carbon emissions from these
plants.
Triton’s report assesses the market based on
feedstock, application, and technology. Here, the power source segment comprises solid biomass, biogas, liquid biomass, and municipal solid
waste.
The acclaimed players in the biomass power
market include Veolia Environnement SA, Vattenfall AB, Mitsubishi Heavy
Industries Ltd, Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises, General Electric Company, and
Ramboll Group.
Thermax Ltd manufactures and sells boilers,
heating & cooling equipment, industrial chemicals, and water & waste
management equipment. It also undertakes turnkey contracts for power plants and
offers operation & maintenance services for the same. Two of its key
segments include: Energy and Environment. The Energy segment includes products
such as absorption chillers/heat pumps, boilers & heaters, solar equipment,
power plants, and related services. Whereas, the Environment segment includes
products such as ion exchange resins & performance chemicals, water &
waste recycling systems, air pollution control equipment/systems, and related
services. The India-based company is headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra.
