The increasing reliance on fossil fuels for
energy in Europe has led to a growing demand for flue gas desulfurization
technologies. These fossil fuels, which include coal, oil, and natural gas,
remain primary sources of energy generation in many European nations. However,
as environmental regulations become stricter, the installation of FGD systems
is becoming necessary to meet emission limits and improve air quality at the
local level. In light of the European Union’s (EU) ambitious targets to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, there is a growing emphasis on transitioning towards
cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. This creates significant
opportunities for players in the flue gas desulfurization market.
Germany
leads with the majority of share in the region’s market. The nation has been actively constructing or
is in the process of developing new coal power plants that adhere to stringent
environmental regulations. Notable instances include the Moorburg hard coal
power station situated in Hamburg, as well as the hard coal power facilities
located in Datteln and LĂĽnen, among others. The 1,100 MW Datteln 4 power plant
is a prime example, boasting a highly advanced multi-step flue gas purification
system designed to eliminate sulfur and other pollutants. Such steps widen the
scope of the flue gas desulfurization market across the nation.
In France, there is a rising trend in the
adoption of flue gas desulfurization technology. An increasing emphasis on
environmental sustainability and the implementation of strict regulatory
measures is driving this trend. The primary goal is to reduce sulfur dioxide
(SO2) emissions from industrial and power generation facilities. As a result,
FGD systems are now playing a crucial role in the nation’s efforts to control
pollution effectively.
Spray-dry absorption, in combination with
bag-house particulate collection, has been suggested as a practical substitute
for wet scrubbing in boilers that burn low to medium-sulfur coal or fuel oil.
In this process, hot flue gas encounters a finely dispersed alkaline
suspension, typically a lime-water slurry. This arrangement provides a droplet
residence time of 10 to 15 seconds, making it a viable approach for addressing
sulfur emissions.
The
market is broadly sectioned into technology and application. Based on technology, it includes spray dry,
wet, and dry FGD systems.
The
major companies in the market include Andritz AG, Babcock & Wilcox
Enterprises Inc, General Electric Company, and Ducon Technologies Inc.
Andritz AG offers hydropower station equipment,
machinery for metalworking and steel production, and solutions for solid and
liquid separation in municipal and industrial domains. The company extends its
expertise to various sectors, such as automation, steam boiler plants, biomass
boilers, etc. Additionally, it provides solutions in flue gas cleaning and
panelboard production (MDF). Operating across multiple regions, Andritz AG is
headquartered in Austria.
