The rise of the newborn screening market in the United Kingdom is backed by the support from the government for newborn screening and the rise in the occurrence of sickle cell diseases in newborns. According to the National Health Service Organization (England, UK), England’s screening programs are leading the world. Additionally, the UK government has enthusiastically been supporting various programs that support newborn screening. The government has introduced three programs named NHS (National Health Service) Newborn and Infant Physical Examination Programme, NHS Newborn Blood Spot Screening Programme and the NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme.
The NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme aims to offer a hearing screening test for babies during the first few weeks of their lives to detect who are born with hearing loss. As per the NHS Organization, around 1-2 babies in every 1000 are born with permanent hearing loss in one or both ears, which in turn, would generate the need for newborn screening considering the rising need to detect diseases such as hearing loss, critical congenital heart disease (CCHD), etc. Furthermore, the rising prevalence of sickle cell diseases in newborn babies positively influences the growth of the newborn screening market in the United Kingdom.
The rise of the newborn screening market in Germany is backed by government projects supporting technological advancement in the field of newborn screening and mandatory government regulations for newborn screening. According to the European Commission, a cooperation project between clinics in Poland and Germany has led to advances in newborn screening for metabolic diseases in both the countries with an aim to bring potential health benefits to thousands of newborn babies every year. With this project, countries are now able to diagnose more diseases. In addition, due to the purchase of new and advanced medical equipment, the screening lab in Germany and Poland can now detect 14 diseases which are very common in newborn babies. As a result of it, adoption for newborn screening would rise, considering the technological advancements in newborn screening techniques.
