Greenhouse gases (GHG)
emissions from human activities in several countries can be mostly attributed
to the industrial, energy consumption and transport sectors. However, in
Brazil, a solid 80% originates from changes in land use patterns. Emissions due
to land use change consist of those caused by biomass burning, deforestation,
soil cultivation drainage of wetlands, and conversion of natural to
agricultural ecosystems. Policymakers are working on withstanding the climate
change threat with policies aimed at minimizing GHG emissions to the atmosphere
and maximizing the retention of nitrogen and carbon in the lithosphere and
biosphere.
The Government of Brazil has been
implementing measures to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and maximize the
retention of carbon and nitrogen in the biosphere and lithosphere. For
instance, in 2008, it launched a National Climate Change Policy. This was followed
by the government announcing a voluntary target for a reduction in total GHG
emissions by 2020. A large part of GHG emissions is said to come from the
agricultural sector. Thus, in 2009, the government launched the Low-Carbon
Agriculture Program, acting on its commitment to cut down projected carbon
emissions. The aim of the program is to reduce emissions and achieve carbon
sequestration, while ensuring agricultural efficiency as well as food security.
