According to an
article, there is a high occurrence of inherited genetic diseases in Saudi
Arabia, due to the highly prevalent tradition of consanguineous marriage in the
country. When close relatives marry, the risk of parents passing on recessive
genetic mutations to their offspring increases significantly. Also, as per a
2015 article in IEEE Pulse, 20% of the children born in the country had genetic
diseases like diabetes at the time of birth, and another 8% of these newborns
had inherited more severe diseases.

solution to this issue prevalent in the Saudi Arabian population, genetic
researchers at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center
(KFSHRC) began started their research on genetic disease. They then implemented
a national project, called the Saudi Human Genome Program (SHGP), to study the
genetic basis of diseases in the KSA and the Middle East. This program was
formally launched at the end of 2013, with an aim to sequence the genomes of
100,000 individuals using targeted next-generation sequencing. Thus, the growing
number of studies and researches in genetics in the country are estimated to
boost the digital genome market’s growth in Saudi Arabia during the forecast
