Over 15 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) was generated in Saudi Arabia in 2017. The rate of MSW generation is expected to increase twofold by the year 2033, owing to the rise in population, rapid urbanization, and economic development. The waste management system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is characterized by the absence of waste management facilities in the country. The garbage, which is collected from individual or community bins, is disposed-off in landfills or dumpsites. A staggering 90% of MSW is disposed-off in landfills or dumpsites, with only 10% being recycled. Several landfills in the country are thus expected to reach their optimal limits within the next ten years.
There is limited adoption of recycling and energy recovery. However, these practices are receiving increased attention under the country’s Vision 2030 program. Plans of installing waste-to-energy plants in Saudi Arabia are in progress. WtE techniques based on modern technologies, such as gasification, incineration, anaerobic digestion, and pyrolysis, are expected to cater to the demand for power and waste management in the country. The Vision 2030, has put forth a strong regulatory & investment framework for the development of Saudi Arabia’s waste-to-energy market. IRENA’s ambitious target of 3GW of energy from waste is likely to propel the waste-to-energy market in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
AE&E Group GmbH, a subsidiary of A-TEC Industries AG, is engaged in designing, supplying, and commissioning power generation and environmental technologies for the energy sector. The company offers solutions for generating energy from waste (EfW) and steam generators, plants, and residue treatment systems. The company has established its facilities in Turkey and South Africa in the Middle East and Africa region, as well as other regions such as the Asia-Pacific, North America, & Latin America, and several countries in Europe.
