The automotive industry in the
US accounts for majority of the demand for industrial robots, but other
industries are also adopting automation in their production facilities. US-based
companies that manufacture industrial robots are not at the same level as their
foreign-based counterparts. However, the country is a major exporter of these
robots, partly because of foreign-owned subsidiaries. Foreign firms like FANUC
(Japan), KUKA AG (Germany), and ABB Group (Switzerland), have
production facilities in the United States. These firms are the leading global
industrial robots manufacturers, most notably for the automotive industry. It
is these partnerships that make the United States a major industrial robot
exporter.
Though, foreign-based industrial
robot manufacturers have production facilities in the country, the production
capacity is not sufficient to cater to all the demand in the US market. Thus,
United States-based firms in the automotive industry also import robots. For
instance, Tesla uses robots from KUKA AG. Robots from Europe and Japan account
for the most imports to the US. As per industry sources, in 2018, the European
industrial robots accounted for 39% of the imports (by value), while those from
Japan and Canada accounted for 16% and 9%, respectively. The growing demand for
automotive robots in the country is expected to foster the growth of its automotive
robotics market in the forthcoming period.

including linear conveyor modules, grippers, controllers, single- and
multi-axis Cartesian, and other products. It is a subsidiary of Yamaha Motors,
which is one of the leading names in the automotive industry. The company has a
diverse product portfolio of SCARA, Cartesian, pick & place, and
single-axis robots. The series of its product range include YK-XG series SCARA
Robots, YA series, XY-X series, and FLIP-X Series. Founded in 1976, the
US-based company is headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
